What are custom mouthguards?
A custom mouthguard is spongy, thick shield that sits in your mouth and over your teeth.
A mouthguard is usually worn during sports and other activities that involve a higher risk of impact to the face and/or jaw. They can also be used for other purposes, including jaw issues, snoring, teeth grinding or sleep apnoea.
Custom sports mouthguards can protect you from:
- Jaw joint and soft tissue injuries
- Neck and jaw injuries
And also:
- Reducing the likelihood of concussions
- Improving your performance in the field over regular mouthguards
- Cushioning your teeth against impact.
Got a custom mouthguard? Here’s how to take care of it
Before and after the game or anytime you use it, brush it with a toothbrush and paste, and let it airdry.
Occasionally, clean the mouthguard with cool, soapy water and rinse thoroughly.
When you aren’t using it, keep it in a cool place and leave it in a plastic container with vents for airflow.
Heat can destroy the shape of a custom mouthguard so make sure to bring it in after a game, because if you keep it in the car, you can destroy it! If you see any wear or tear, it’s probably time to replace it, so bring it to your next appointment.
